The Horror of Buried
The scariest scene in Buried is a conversation between our only onscreen character and his employer. I won't spoil what is discussed. I will say this: nothing is scarier in this film than the pervasive indifference that Ryan Reynolds' character faces. Nobody can do anything, all they can do is secure themselves. I can't relate to a slasher. I can relate to dealing with a voice on the phone that won't help. That's what really makes this film unnerving.

Gleeful
Who is shocked by the Glee/GQ controversy?
This is nothing new. It really isn't. Sex is used to sell tv. Duh. Attractive women have to use their bodies to sell their careers. This is how it is. I'm not approving. I still think talent is sexier than looks. But this is not news. It's standard.

Of Hobbits
Peter Jackson inevitably is coming home to middle Earth. I'm not shocked. King Kong underwhelmed audiences. The Lovely Bones REALLY fizzled. But he gets Tolkien. Welcome home. Never leave.

Outgrowth
Let's get the first post, about me garbage out of the way. I'm Austin Shinn. I love movies. I figured going to a blog exclusively on such would be fun, an outlet to vent. This won't be just a review blog. What follows is a good example.
-------------
When I was a kid I figured I would eventually outgrow my love of animation. I figured by high school I'd be done with cartoons. I felt insecure about getting excited about Toy Story 2. So insecure I didn't see it week one. But I went week 2. And I haven't seen a Pixar film later than the third day since. I loved Toy Story 2. And of course Toy Story 3 just hit. I saw it again Wednesday. Great film. Part of why I haven't outgrown animation is animated films evolved. Pixar makes the best films period.
But I think I have outgrown Jackass. Jackass 3D wasn't as much fun as the first two. And while I think the film lacks the strength of the first two, I think a lot of the issue was me. I was a bit easier entertained at 18. The shocks were stronger. The stunts felt more vibrant. The audience around me seemed to take it in well, but I would have preferred something like The Hangover. Also a strong R. But with dialogue, situations. Similarly South Park also shocks but with a point. Just shocking, I'm moving on.
